
Chinese gardens were a microcosm, it is the sophisticated art combining several different elements such as pavilions, corridors, small hills and carefully selected and placed rocks,lotus ponds with goldfish swimming in them, bridges, winding paths,trees and shrubs to create a world in miniature. The skilful gardener has the qualities of a painter,poet,architect,and sculptor. He can construct his own world in a confined space.
Yu Garden, a fully restored classical Chinese garden. Built in 1577 by a city official named Pan Yunduan who thought to create an idyllic spot for his father's old age. Although the Yu Garden occupies less than five acres it seems far larger. There are many details in the Yu Garden to look out for. Each section is divided up by white curving walls that are toped by the undulating body of a dragon. The walls end with splendidly carved dragon head. The garden contains over 30 pavilions and labyrinth of stairs,corridors and pathways. - Three-Ears-of Corn Hall is the largest structure in the Garden. Carved on its doors and windows are rice ears,millet,wheat seedlings,melons and fruit which symbols of plenty. Note the essay displayed on the wall facing the entrance is the first owner of Yu Garden-Pan Yunduan.
- The corridor over the pond leading to the best scenery - The Grand Rockery,built of 2,000 tonnes of yellow stone quarried from Zhejiang Province and cemented together with a kind of rice glue,stands 14 meter high in the heart of the garden.
- 'Yu Le Xie' at the foot of the rockery,beside a pool is the Pavilion for Viewing Frolicking fish.
- The Exquisite Jade Rock(Yuling Long) a large,curiously shaped rock,standing in front of the Hall of Jade Magnificence (Yu Huan Tang)which is intended for the collection of northern song dynasty (960-1127)
- The hall of mildness (He Xu Tang) which contains a century-old set of furniture make of banyan tree roots.
- Hall of Heralding Spring (Dianchun Tang) During the Taiping Rebellion,. Some citizens of Shanghai known as the 'Society of Little Swords' joined the peasant uprising against the Qing dynasty organizing a rebellion form within the walls of the city in 1853 they used the ball as their headquarters.
